Syria tests new justice system with sweeping prosecutions of former regime officials

    Thousands of Kurds submit applications for Syrian citizenship

      25 May 2026.  Interior Ministry committees have received 2,892 family applications for naturalization —covering over 10,500 people—under Presidential Decree No. 13, which in January this year recognized their legal, cultural and linguistic rights, integrating them into the national fabric.Read more at: ENAB BALADI

      Judges try Bashar al-Assad, his brother Maher al-Assad, and others in absentia as fugitives

        10 May 2026.  A criminal court in Damascus stripped Bashar and Maher al-Assad of their civil rights, placing their sizeable assets under state administration.         Committee reports steady progress in reuniting missing children with their families

          1 May 2026.  Syria’s committee for missing children states that 194 boys and girls have been reunited with their families.           First post-liberation Syrian medical conference aims to become “launchpad for modern health system”

            2 April 2026.  Covering a broad range of medical fields and specialties, the conference sought to advance research, strengthen professional cooperation, and address ethical responsibilities such as documenting violations against detainees.             Legal conference explores reforms to paternal descent laws harmful to women and children

              31 March 2026.  A Damascus University conference focused on loopholes in Syria’s existing Nationality Law, based on a 1969 decree, which allows discrimination against women married to non-Syrians and their children.               Syria posts one of the year’s biggest gains in global freedom rankings

                22 March 2026.  Syria gained five points in the 2025 “Freedom in the World” index, which measures political rights and civil liberties. Freedom House cited progress in media activity, personal freedoms, and the absence of journalist arrests.                 Syria expands cooperation with UN team to reunite children and families

                  5 March 2026.  Minister Hind Kabawat met UN commissioners in Damascus to strengthen cooperation on investigations into the fate of children of detainees and the forcibly disappeared, aiming to improve access to information in this critical humanitarian area.                       Hama publicly commemorates brutal massacre for the first time in 44 years

                        3 February 2026.   In 1982, the Hafez al-Assad regime killed an estimated 40,000 Hama civilians, forced the disappearance of 17,000 others and decimated entire neighbourhoods, for opposing the regime’s oppression.                                 Ministry of Culture honors historian for documenting decade of revolution’s history

                                  12 December 2025.  Tamer Turkmane was honored for a personal initiative that became the largest archive in the nation capturing the events, sacrifices and struggles of the Syrian revolution.                                   UN Security Council makes landmark visit to Damascus on 1st anniversary of the new Syria

                                    4 December 2025.  In a rare consensus, all fifteen members of the UN Security Council agreed on the visit to Damascus, the first in 14 years.
