Syria’s newly formed People’s Assembly convened for its inaugural session in Damascus on July 12, 2026, marking the country’s first legislature since the fall of the Assad regime. This milestone is a significant institutional step for the “new Syria”, turning a temporary governance arrangement into a functioning legislative pillar of the emerging post-authoritarian state, and preparing for eventual permanent constitutional rule and elections.
The 210-member transitional parliament, which will serve a 30-month term, elected constitutional law scholar and former judge Dr. Abdul Hamid al-Awak as Speaker. President Ahmad al-Sharaa addressed the legislators, emphasizing a new chapter for Syria focused on institutional independence and consolidation of the state.
