In a historic speech to the UN General Assembly, the first by a Syrian head of state since 1967, Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa declared: “Here is Syria today, returning to its worthy position among the nations of the world.” He acknowledged Arab, Islamic, US, and EU allies for their support in Syria’s rebuilding, and later held meetings with high officials of several nations including Ukraine, with which diplomatic ties were restored.
