France begins return of vast public wealth stolen by Assad’s uncle

    13 January 2026.  France is preparing to return the first installment (€ 32 million) of a vast fortune embezzled by Rifaat al-Assad, Bashir Assad’s uncle, which was hidden in European assets. The agreement is seen as a landmark in international law on countries’ stolen assets.
